XpanD is a 3D projection system based on time multiplex, known for its shutter glasses. Every second each eye sees 72 frames. That needs the projector to be running at 144 Hertz. The glasses weared by the audience are synced via infrared transmission. Infrared signals for the transmitter come from the projector. Shutter glasses are also known as active stereo 3D because there are electronic parts in the glasses, opening and closing them in an active manner. © Copyright www.stereo-3D-info.de |
advantages and disadvantages
The main disadvantage for XpanD are the glasses themselves. Since they have to open and close the liquid crystal layer 144 times a second they loose a lot of light, making the image darker. Then, because of the electronic parts , the glasses are more heavy and more expensive compared to standard Pola glasses. XpanD today is a quite reliable system, giving a good 3D image on the screen. People can turn heads without causing problems (like linear polarisation glasses do have). In addition you wont need to buy a special silver screen which makes XpanD cheaper to install. © Copyright www.stereo-3D-info.de

typical use XpanD is not really the best bet for very big screens. That is mainly because of the darker image but also because shutter glasses are quite expensive. And sometimes they brake or get lost. Its okay for little cinemas with small numbers of glasses. There the glasses can be collected after each screening and they also need to be cleaned as well. These facts make Xpand a good system for special events, exhibitions, research or education. © Copyright www.stereo-3D-info.de |
development
The technology behind XpanD was initially used by NuVision. NuVision was taken over by X6D Ltd. Now the technology is only known as XpanD. In German-speaking countries XpanD was the leader on the market for quite a time, but this was a time when there were not more than 20 3D-cinemas in these countries. When RealD started to equip a big german multiplex chain, the situation changed suddenly. Today there is competition running of all available systems on the german market. © Copyright www.stereo-3D-info.de
